Welcome to the Middleton Rail Trail website!

The Middleton Rail Trail Alliance (MiRTA) is dedicated to turning a 4.5 mile stretch of the old Essex Railroad that runs through Middleton from the Danvers border to the North Andover border into a multi-use trail.  The trail will serve as both a recreational and alternative transportation resource for residents and visitors of all ages and abilities.

In November 2019, MiRTA was approved as a recognized 501c organization, which provides a formal structure to accomplish its goals.  Our goal is to develop a strong grassroots effort within the community to build, maintain and support the Rail Trail. Phase 1 of the Rail Trail, Central St. to Essex St is expected to start in Spring 2020.

October

Due to the current restrictions within the state of Massachusetts regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, MiRTA suspended holding monthly meetings from March through April. We resumed our meetings on September 24 and are working to publish future agendas on our website.  Even though we have not been formally meeting we’ve been quite busy.

Postcards announcing updates to MiRTA were developed back in March.  Due to the pandemic shutdown we held off on sending them out.  They were eventually sent out in August to every household and business in town.  We have received several donations since then and continue to receive donations.

MiRTA participated in numerous discussions and site walks with representatives of ConCom, DPW, Town Planner, MELD and Town Manager to discuss implementation on Phase 1 from Central St to Essex St.

MiRTA applied and was awarded a grant on Sept 8th for Phase 1 from Central St to Essex St including all excavation, site work, materials, flashing beacons and street paint for Essex St crossing including ADA ramps, erosion controls etc., from the Shared Streets and Shared Spaces Project sponsored by the State of Massachusetts.

The project was posted as required by state law including a bid application package for Phase 1.  The bid was awarded in late September and a ground breaking ceremony was held on October 2.

Construction of Phase 1 commenced on October 7 and is nearly complete!

This is a very exciting time as we move forward with the Trail construction.
